PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University has been picked as the preseason favorite in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball with the release of the 2013 KIAC Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll by the league office on Tuesday (Aug. 13).

In voting conducted by the KIAC volleyball coaches, Point Park came out on top as the team to beat this year in the conference. The Pioneers, who are coming off a record of 30-10 overall and 9-1 in the KIAC last year, received 112 points and four of 12 first-place votes.

Not far behind in the poll is defending KIAC Tournament and regular season champion Indiana East with 109 points and a conference-high six of 12 first-place votes. Point Park lost to IU East in the KIAC Tournament finals, 3-2, last year to fall one match short of a second-consecutive trip to the NAIA national tournament.

But it's Point Park that's the preseason favorite this year. Although the Pioneers have just 3 of 10 letter winners returning and graduated nine seniors, they have capable returners and a recruiting class of five transfers and three freshmen to make up for the losses.

"It's gratifying that we are respected within the conference," said Point Park head coach Mike Bruno, who is in his ninth year at the school. "But the fact of the matter is that we must perform well in 11 conference matches and in the tournament."

After Point Park and Indiana East, next in the poll is Asbury (Ky.) in third place with 104 points and two of 12 first-place votes. Indiana Southeast is in fourth with 93 points to round out the top four.

Aside from Point Park taking over the top spot from Indiana East, the top seven places in this year's preseason poll are the same as the final standings from last season. The complete listing of all 12 teams in the poll is at the bottom of this page.

Each KIAC team will play 11 conference matches. There are 12 teams in KIAC volleyball this year with the addition of new conference member Indiana Kokomo. The Pioneers play their first KIAC match at Indiana Kokomo on Aug. 29.

The Pioneers open their KIAC home schedule with a rematch of last year's KIAC finals versus Indiana East on the first day of the Point Park Battle of the Boulevard tournament Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

Another highlight of the KIAC schedule includes Sept. 4 versus local rival Carlow as part of Jam The Gym at Kiski Area High School (7 p.m.).

The rest of the KIAC schedule consists of a three-day road trip Sept. 12-14 to play six KIAC matches in a little more than 48 hours, a home date versus Midway on Sept. 29 at 8 a.m. and a trip to Indiana Southeast on Oct. 19. The KIAC Tournament will be held Nov. 15-16.

Point Park opens its 2013 schedule at the end of next week with a trip to the Early Bird Tournament hosted by Michigan-Dearborn Aug. 23-24. The Pioneers opened preseason training on campus on Monday (Aug. 12).
