Pioneers drop season opener to Tiffin on Day 1 of Clarion Tourney

CLARION, Pa - The Point Park University volleyball team lost its season-opening match, 3-1, to Tiffin at the Clarion Tournament Friday.

Point Park (0-1) won the first set but dropped the next three in losing, 15-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-19.


Point Park had won its last three season openers. The last time that the Pioneers lost to start a season was in 2005, when Mike Bruno coached his first match as Pioneers' head coach. Bruno is now in his fifth year at Point Park.


Senior middle hitter Megan Lamens (New Baltimore/Berlin Bros.) had 10 kills and three blocks for the Pioneers. Freshman outside hitter Lindsay Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) tallied 10 kills in her first-career match.

Freshman Alyssa Hall (Moon/Moon Area) led the defense with 19 digs, and junior Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) added 10 digs.

Ashley Zietak (Pittsburgh/Brashear) chipped in six kills and registered a .455 hitting percentage.

Point Park continues play in the Clarion Tournament Saturday with a match versus Ohio Dominican at 10 a.m. The Panthers had been members of the American Mideast Conference before making a move to NCAA Division II this year. Ohio Dominican finished third in the AMC a year ago with an 11-3 record and beat Point Park in three sets in last year's meeting.

Ohio Dominican lost to Clarion in straight sets, 25-14, 25-22, 25-17, on Friday. The Pioneers finish up tournament play versus host Clarion Saturday at 4 p.m.
