Pioneers extend win streak to 11 matches, Bruno closes in on 200th win

Sept. 18, 2009

PITTSBURGH - The Point Park University volleyball team won a pair of matches Friday at the Carnegie Mellon Crossover to extend its school-recording winning streak to 11 consecutive matches. In picking up two wins, Pioneers' head coach Mike Bruno moved to within one victory of 200 for his career.

Point Park (11-3) started the day by handing Frostburg State (10-2) its first loss in nine matches. The Pioneers dropped the first set, but rebounded to win, 3-1. Point Park won by scores of 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.

In the second match of the day, Point Park swept John Carroll, 29-27, 25-11, 25-19. Point Park set a season-high for points in a set in winning the first set.

The Pioneers started the season by losing three matches at the Clarion Tournament. But Point Park has won every match since, and they haven't lost since Aug. 29. Point Park's winning streak is the longest current streak in the American Mideast Conference, and it bested the previous school record by four victories.

Bruno, who is in his fifth season as head coach at Point Park, entered this year needing 12 wins for 200 in his career. He has a record of 83-77 at Point Park and a record of 199-135 (.596) overall.

The 2009 season is Bruno's 10th year as a head coach on the college level, and he has averaged more than 20 wins per season for his career. Bruno took over the Pioneers' program in 2005 after spending five years at NCAA Division III member Waynesburg. He posted a record of 116-58 for the Yellow Jackets.

The Pioneers will try to get Bruno's 200th win with two matches Saturday. Point Park meets Muskingum at 10 a.m. and faces Westminster at 2 p.m.

Senior middle hitter Megan Lamens (New Baltimore/Berlin Bros.) continued her strong play with 16 kills and four blocks versus Frostburg State. Teammate Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) added 16 digs and 11 kills.

Lindsey Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) chipped in seven kills and six blocks while fellow freshman Margaret Gillooly (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) added 18 digs.

Setter Katie Geary (Pittsburgh/Shaler) had 41 assists versus Frostburg State and 42 assists versus John Carroll. Oberacker and Roddy each had 12 kills in Friday's second match. Oberacker turned in a very impressive hitting percentage of .750 for the match.

On defense, Amanda Ardinger (Moon/Moon Area) posted a team-high 23 digs.
