Malone stifles Point Park, 3-0, in American Mideast Conference sweep

Oct. 21, 2010

CANTON, Ohio -- Malone University shut down the Point Park University offense in sweeping to a 3-0 victory in an American Mideast Conference volleyball match Thursday night.

Malone (27-5 overall, 6-1 AMC) held Point Park (23-9, 2-3 AMC) to just 21 total kills in winning the match by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.

The 21 kills established a season-low for the Pioneers, whose previous low was a 30-kill output in an early season loss to then-No. 19 Shawnee State. Point Park was swept for the third time on the year with the other two being defeats at the hands of Shawnee State and Wheeling Jesuit.

The Point Park defense held Malone to a fairly low hitting percentage of .162 and also put up 10 total team blocks, but that was not enough to make up for a season-low hitting percentage of .020 for Point Park.

Rachel Roddy, a native of Greensburg, Pa., had a team-high nine kills for the Pioneers. Ashley Zietak (Pittsburgh/Brashear) tallied five kills and six blocks, and Lindsey Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) chipped in five kills and five blocks.

Defensively, libero Amanda Ardinger (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon Area) led the way with 16 digs, and Margaret Gillooly (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) chipped in 10 digs.

The loss leaves Point Park at 2-3 in the AMC, and it was their third-consecutive conference loss following a 2-0 start to league play. The three losses were to the top three teams -- Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Walsh and Malone.

Point Park's next match is home versus Daemen on Saturday (1 p.m.). The Wildcats are 4-3 in the AMC and currently inhabit fifth place in the conference. Point Park has five conference matches remaining, and the top five teams make the AMC tournament field.
