Point Park rolls to a pair of victories on Day 1 of Pioneer Volleyball Invitational

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University rolled to a pair of 3-0 victories on Day 1 of its Pioneer Volleyball Invitational at Greentree SportsPlex on Friday. The Pioneers (11-1) breezed to sweeps of Carlow and West Liberty and have now won seven matches in a row. Each of those seven wins have come by a score of 3-0 as Point Park has won 21 sets in a row.

Point Park defeated Carlow by scores of 25-13, 25-18, 25-13. The Pioneers beat West Liberty, 25-17, 25-14, 25-13.

Point Park's offense was in high gear with a .398 attacking percentage vs. Carlow and a .365 percentage vs. West Liberty. The Pioneers also provided a big block with 12 blocks vs. Carlow and 11 vs. West Liberty. The back row put together 32 digs vs. Carlow and 50 vs. West Liberty.

Lindsey Oberacker tallied 12 kills, six blocks and four digs versus Carlow. Chelsea Katkich totaled eight digs, and Brittany Lhota chipped in six kills and six blocks. Nicole Wurstle accounted for five kills and five blocks. Setter Tayler Pugliese handed out 38 assists. Amanda Ardinger recorded a team-high 13 digs.

West Liberty didn't have an answer for Point Park's middle hitters. Lhota came through with 10 kills, an attacking percentage of .750 (10 K 1 E, 12 ATT.) and two blocks. Wurstle had seven kills, hit .538 (7 K, 0 E, 13 ATT) and totaled six blocks.

On the outside, Oberacker put up another nine kills to go along with team-bests of 12 digs and three aces. Katkich had seven kills and three blocks. Pugliese added 37 assists and five kills while Alyssa Hall came up with 10 digs.

Along with Point Park, Notre Dame (OH) also 2-0 on the day. The Falcons beat West Liberty, 3-0, then topped Ohio Valley, 3-0. Ohio Valley had outlasted Carlow, 3-2, in the only match of the day that was not a sweep.

Day 2 action of the Pioneer Invitational continues Saturday with five matches, beginning with Carlow vs. West Liberty at 8 a.m. Point Park plays Ohio Valley at 10 a.m. and finishes the event at 4 p.m. vs. Notre Dame (OH).

Fan Vans are available for the 4 p.m. match vs. Notre Dame, and they are Free with Student ID. Fan Vans leave the Student Center Lot at 3:30 p.m. with return service after the match.
