VANDERGRIFT, Pa. -- The Point Park University volleyball team won its Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, 3-0, over Carlow on Wednesday at Jam The Gym at Kiski Area High School.

The win ended a six-match losing streak for the Pioneers (3-6, 1-0 KIAC), who won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-19, 25-12.

"We just needed a match where we could recollect our confidence, play within ourselves and stop the landslide," head coach Mike Bruno said.

Point Park won the first game 25-9 and its .364 hitting percentage is a season best. It registered 12 kills and four errors in 22 total attacks.

Carlow (0-6, 0-1 KIAC) had the advantage for parts of the second set, however the Pioneers prevailed by a 25-19 score.

A key moment in the second game was when Isabella Vavrek had a kill to give Point Park a 13-12 lead, which would not be relinquished. The Pioneers had nine attack errors in the game but also registered 20 kills.

Point Park took game three 25-12 to sweep the match.

Shiloh Simonson had nine kills and six digs while Nikki Inquartano added eight kills for Point Park. Katie Baynum and Ashley Taylor each had six kills. Emily Meng and Cara Bradley combined for 37 assists, and Tabea Dalliard had a team-leading eight digs.

Point Park will next play its first home game Friday as part of the Battle of the Boulevard. It will take on IU Southeast at 3 p.m. in its home opener at the Student Center Gym.

"We still have to continue growing as a team and learn to trust each other a little more," said Bruno. "We have to play without fear and grow as a cohesive unit instead of six individuals. It's a process and this weekend will continue that process."
