Safeguarding Valuable Property
The Public Safety Department recommends that members of the campus community record the serial numbers of all valuable equipment, computers, stereos, televisions, etc. and file them away for safekeeping. Should a member elect to engrave his/her valuables, DO NOT use a Social Security number. Instead use information that will have meaning to the member alone, including family birth dates, mother's maiden name, etc. In addition, property should never be left unattended in public areas; offices and rooms should be locked when unattended. The thefts which have occurred on campus have been “crimes of opportunity”, i.e. property was stolen because it was left unattended in a public area or because it was left unsecured in an unlocked office or dorm room.
