Three-Year Program Schedule

Earn A Doctorate in Community Engagement in Three Years

Devoted to theory, research and practice, the Ph.D. program prepares students to identify, analyze and interpret the essential elements of community engagement.

The 54-credit Ph.D. program schedule is organized into four blocks of study:

  • Block 1: Community Engagement core (18 credit hours taken at the start of the program);
  • Block 2: Research and Practicum core (12 credit hours);
  • Block 3: Proseminars (choose 12 credit hours, taken during the summers. Up to 12 credits may be transferred into this block pending approval of the program director.); and
  • Block 4: Dissertation courses (12 credit hours taken after successful completion of the comprehensive exam).

Below is a course sequence to complete the Ph.D. program in three years:

Year One (21 credits)

Fall 1 Seminar in Leadership, Communities and Engagement Retreat: Aug. 17-19, 2017.
Fall 1 Comparative Organizational Systems One night per week for eight weeks. Fall 1 held on Thursday evenings.
Fall 2 Leadership, Governance and Ethics One night per week for eight weeks. Fall 2 held on Thursday evenings.
Spring 1 Public Policy, Advocacy and Social Change One night per week for eight weeks.
Spring 2 Quantitative Research Methods One night per week for eight weeks.
Summer 1 Proseminar I Varies
Summer 2 Proseminar II Varies


Year Two (18 credits)

Fall 1 Program Design, Implementation and Evaluation One night per week for eight weeks
Fall 2 Qualitative Research Methods I (same)
Spring 1 Qualitative Research Methods II (same)
Spring 2 Social Entrepreneurship (same)
Summer 1 Proseminar III Varies
Summer 2 Proseminar IV Varies


Year Three (15 credits)

Fall 1 Community Engagement Practicum Independent
Fall 2 Dissertation Seminar One night per week for eight weeks
Spring 1 Dissertation I Independent

Summer 1 Integrated Community Engagement Report One night per week for eight weeks
Summer 2 Continuing Dissertation if Needed Independent
