Master of Arts - Organizational Leadership

COURSES | PROGRAM GUIDE | FACULTY

The Master of arts in Organizational Leadership (MLDR) responds to the evolving workforce needs as well as student interests and the demand of a master's program that prepares its graduates for careers in business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.  The MLDR program addresses the needs of professionals who hold advanced degrees in discipline-specific areas and who now want to hone leadership acumen as they progress in their careers.  This program, consisting of 30 semester hours, provides its graduates with a strong foundation in management, communication, ethics and organizational leadership as well as career-focused elective opportunities.

Leadership is vital for individual and organizational success in today's changing environment.  The MLDR program incorporates a required internship or research opportunity in order to apply informed theory to practice.  Responding to the complex demands and lives of working professionals, the program is structured so learners can take advantage of evening as well as online course delivery formats.

The goals of the graduate program in Leadership are to provide learners with:

  • an understanding of the epistemological, historical, phychological and sociological contexts in which leaders emerge and the organizational leadership functions.
  • practical leadership experience through an internship or applied research opportunity (thesis or project).
  • the teamwork, communication, leadership and ethical skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly-evolving world environment.

Among the key skills graduate students are expected to achieve are the following:

  • ability to communicate ideas and research findings both in writing and in speech
  • ability to critically evaluate, analyze and synthesize current research and theory into a dynamic framework
  • ability to contribute to their chosen fields in the private and public sectors, both domestically and internationally
  • ability to build on existing knowledge in their chosen field of expertise and to apply knowledge in new ways
  • ability to meaningfully integrate theory and practice in their chosen professions.
