Acting Audition Guidelines
Applicants are asked to present two contrasting, age appropriate, one-minute, memorized monologues from works of established playwrights. Monologues should be from stage plays not from a collection of monologues, or off the internet. Students must have read the entire play and have a thorough understanding of the character they are portraying. The character's age should be within 5 years of the student's age. A two-minute time limit for the total acting audition will be enforced. Original material is not accepted.
On Campus Auditions Only: At the completion of the monologue segment of the audition, some students may be asked to remain in order to rework their monologues under the direction of the faculty auditors. Faculty may choose to conduct a callback session with selected students.
Musical Theatre Audition Guidelines
SONGS: All applicants who audition for the musical theatre program need to prepare TWO CONTRASTING songs, 32-bar cut (up-tempo/ballad, legit/non-legit). At least one selection should be from traditional musical theatre repertoire (pre-1980). Each song should demonstrate vocal technique, strong acting choices, and personality. Sheet music should be appropriately marked for the accompanist. Be prepared to sing both; however, students may or may not be asked to sing the second selection.
MONOLOGUES: Applicants are asked to present two contrasting, age appropriate, one-minute, memorized monologues from works of established playwrights.
Both monologues should be contemporary, realistic selections. Be prepared to present both; however, students may or may not be asked to perform the second selection.
DANCE CALL: After the initial audition, all musical theatre applicants will participate in a dance combination. Bring appropriate dance attire.
On Campus Auditions Only: At the completion of the dance audition, a list of finalists will be posted to participate in a master class as the final segment of the audition. The master class, under the direction of the Musical Theatre faculty, may require students to sing another selection, have their monologues reworked and be interviewed. Auditioning students should bring a copy of their resume and headshot to their audition.
See UNIFIED AUDITIONS INFORMATION page for off campus unified auditions audition scheduling procedures.
Technical Theatre/Design and Stage Management Guidelines
Interviewing students are encouraged to bring a PORTFOLIO to their interview.
Students will interview with the faculty and are encouraged to bring a portfolio to their interview.
Design and Technical portfolios should include work that illustrates their artistic talents and involvement in theatrical productions. Work samples may include photographs of theatrical elements in various stages of completion. Sketches, drawings, paintings, drafting plots, as well as photographs of models and personally-created costumes may also be included in student portfolios.
Stage Management portfolios should include anything that demonstrates organizational and people skills as applied to the student's involvement in theatrical productions. For example: Prompt books including contact sheets, cast lists, prop lists, any rehearsal schedules and/or photographs of performances. Please do NOT include programs.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND APPRENTICESHIPS
Auditions are used as the criteria for awarding of theatre scholarships and apprenticeships. Scholarships are awarded to students that demonstrate exceptional talent during the audition process. Scholarship recipients will be notified of their award status in their artistic acceptance letter.
Apprenticeships are an alternative talent award given to students that show promise through the audition process. Apprenticeship recipients will be notified of their award in their artistic acceptance letter. Students that receive a apprenticeship will be given work assignments within the University.
VIDEO AUDITIONS
It is strongly recommended that prospective students make every attempt to audition in person. Students unable to participate in a scheduled audition may submit a video audition in DVD or videotape format. See the Video Audition Guidelines for Theatre(COMING SOON) for more information.
Audition Decisions
Admission into the Conservatory Theatre Program is based on talent and potential as demonstrated in the audition. Applicants must be artistically accepted into the Theatre program in addition to being academically accepted into the University.
AUDITION DECISIONS WILL BE RELEASED AFTER THE STUDENT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THEIR ACADEMIC ACCEPTANCE FROM THE OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS.
If you have already auditioned or interviewed and have not received your academic admissions decision, please check your PointWeb Accountto see what application items are still needed for an admissions decision to be made. Students that have been academically and artistically accepted will receive notification of their award status one month after their audition.
Degrees Offered - Theatre Arts
The audition for acting and musical theatre is for acceptance into the Bachelor of Arts program. Students may audition for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program during the sophomore year. Transfer students can apply for the B.F.A. program upon completion of one semester in the program.
Because of the hands-on training involved in technical theatre and stage management, entering students are accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program.
