Professor of Broadcasting
David J. Fabilli, professor of broadcasting, has been on Point Park's Journalism & Communications faculty since the 1980s. He also serves as secretary of the University's Faculty Assembly.
Fabilli holds a master's degree in American cultural studies from Youngstown State University and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Duquesne University.
Courses he teaches include: Introduction to Broadcasting, Radio Production, Radio Station Practices, Radio/TV Announcing, Broadcast Programming & Formatting, Radio/TV Copywriting and Effective Speech as well as an occasional 'fun' course on radio history, the recording industry or on American jazz. In addition to teaching, he serves as the faculty director of WPPJ AM-670, the student radio station.
Known professionally as David Jaye, he's also been a familiar voice on Pittsburgh radio since the 1970s, having worked on a number of area radio stations, including WDUQ, WJJJ, 3WS, WJAS, WYJZ, WDSY and WWCS. Currently he produces and hosts a weekly two-hour jazz magazine show on WURP/1550am. His newspaper column Jazzin' Around has run in the suburban McKeesport Daily News since 1995.
In 1996, his self-produced program, The Jazz Place was honored with a Pittsburgh A.I.R. Award (Achievement In Radio) for Best Non-Traditional Show. In 1986 the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival presented him with an Outstanding Contribution to Jazz award for his efforts in promoting jazz in Pittsburgh. For 20 years he arranged for national and local jazz artists to perform at the famed Shadyside Arts Festival.
He's been a long-time member of AFTRA (American Federation of Radio-TV Artists), the IAJE (Int'l. Association for Jazz Education) and has been an active Grammy-voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. His liner notes have appeared on over a dozen nationally released jazz albums, five of which reached the Top-20 and two of which became #1 albums.
Each year, Fabilli accompanies a group of his radio students to NYC for the annual IBS College Radio Conference. He has also traveled extensively attending international jazz festivals and conferences in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Antonio and Toronto.
With a laid-back and easy-going personality, his passion for excellence and fun in radio, music, Italian food, and in coaching motivated broadcast students, is what sparks him to life.
Fabilli says that seeing former students working at ABC-News, CBS, KDKA Radio & TV, WTAE-TV, WBZZ, KQV, Fox Sports, and at dozens of other radio/TV outlets in several small, medium and large markets around the country, is among his greatest career achievements.
