Photojournalism

You’re visual. You are concerned about current events. And because you think pictures can tell great stories, we’ll give you a snapshot of our Photojournalism major.

Photojournalism will expose you to a variety of photography, writing, reporting, design and multimedia courses, and you will learn how to effectively combine words and visuals. You can take classes that focus on storytelling, producing work that can be presented through a variety of visual mediums.

You can use the university’s darkroom, digital photography lab and computer classrooms and take traditional, digital and multimedia photography and editing courses. Writing is also part of this degree, as photojournalists often report as well as take photographs.

You can take more specialized elective courses at Pittsburgh Filmmakers in Oakland, where local professional photographers serve as instructors.

You can work on the student-run media and departmental publications and offices. Freelance, volunteer and internship opportunities are plentiful at local newspapers, magazines, photography studios, production houses, advertising agencies, public relations firms, hospitals, museums and nonprofit organizations.
