Adonai Center for Black Males
Communications and Marketing Internship
Adonai Center for Black Males, once known as Adonai Urban Restoration, is a nonprofit organization in Pittsburgh that was established in 2005 to increase the positive advancement of at-risk young people. The mission of Adonai Center is to address urban disparities and improve the educational, social and economic advancement of black males through human capital development.
We seek to prepare college students for entry into the workforce by providing a thorough understanding of the business functions of an education, economic and human capital services organization to include theory and practical application of attained knowledge. Allegheny County Airport Authority
Communications Department Internship
This internship will expose the student to the communications and public relations aspect of working at an international airport and with the airline industry. The intern will receive hands-on experience in PR activities along with writing news articles and releases, assisting in special events and with the volunteer ambassador program.
Responsibilities:
- Write for airport authority publications, press releases, the airport's website and other communications as needed
- Participate in community relations projects and events
- Take part in media relations, such as expanding list, pitching stories and escorting media within the airport

Social Marketing and Website Internship
Spring 2012
The ACDHS/AAA is seeking an intern to assist in the management of multiple projects at various stages of the project life cycle from research to implementation. The intern will develop and implement three website products: videos, "Ask the Expert" and frequently asked questions. This project has been selected to advance the mission and strategic plan of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging.
The internship will be from November 2011 to May 2012 with a possibility of extension over the summer based on performance and need. Hours are flexible with an expectation that standard organizational office hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The office is located on Smithfield Street in Downtown Pittsburgh, but there will be occasional site visits within the AAA network of providers and occasional on-site and off-site focus group and community meetings.
General project approach:
- Orientation to the ACDHS/AAA and to the overlapping goals of the 2012-2016 ACDHS/AAA Strategic Plan
- Identification of clear roles & responsibilities of the intern in this project
- Development of a work plan to accomplish objectives

Marketing and Communications Internship
The intern’s primary responsibility is to help facilitate increased concern and awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter through a variety of strategic initiatives. The intern will gain experience in marketing, public relations, branding and project management.
Essential job functions:
- Provide public relations support including research, building media lists, writing press releases, making follow-up calls and recording media coverage

Special Event Development Assistant

This internship at the American Lung Association's Pittsburgh office will focus on assisting development staff in the planning and implementation of fundraising events, such as the Fight for Air Walk, our gala in October, smaller “wrap-around” fundraising events and the Stair Climb event held each spring.
The work schedule is flexible; however, a minimum of four hours a week is required. This is an unpaid internship but can be used for college credit and/or building great job experience and is an opportunity to cultivate your skills in public speaking, written communication, marketing, fundraising, and volunteer recruitment.

The Arthritis Foundation-Western Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh offers two internships: a communications and development internship and a community outreach internship. Information specific to each can be found below.
COMMUNICATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP
The communications and development intern will assist the director of development and the community campaigns manager in the planning of special events including written, online and press communications. The intern must work a minimum of 10 hours per week (to be worked between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday). Business casual attire is required unless otherwise noted.
Responsibilities include:
Intern is responsible for planning, implementing and participating in any fundraising events during the internship. Specific duties may include:
- Assisting with planning of special events, including meeting with event committees, developing community resources, generating new ideas and attending event meetings
- Working with development staff to increase quality of events
- Aiding development director and special events directors with tasks that are specific to each special event/function

Media Relations Internship
Bethany College in Bethany, W.V., is seeking qualified applicants to immediately fill the position of media relations intern. This position will report to the Director of Communications. The media relations intern is responsible for gathering information, writing and disseminating news releases and feature stories about the College, its students, programs, activities, events and personnel. Compensation includes a stipend, on-campus housing and a meal plan.

The Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau (BCTCB) is seeking a proactive and personable PR/marketing intern who enjoys planning events, writing promotional materials and interacting with consumers. Our intern will gain an incredible amount of real-world hands-on experience primarily focused on two annual events, the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival and the Regatta at Lake Arthur, which will both take place in August 2012.
Because our office has a small staff, our intern will be involved in many elements of the bureau’s daily operations. The intern will write press releases, promotional copy and correspondence. Intern to support Gigapan outreach
CREATE Lab of Carnegie Mellon University is looking for an intern to support Gigapan outreach activities. Our lab collaborates with educators and other partners to explore the role of technology and robotics in empowering communities. Gigapan community outreach fosters learning and conversations through creating and interacting with large-scale gigapixel images.

No previous journalism experience is required. We’re looking for an enthusiastic student who enjoys getting to know neighborhoods and talking to people — we’ll help you out with the rest (interviewing, writing, editing).
Our newspaper has served the Northside for 25 years, and we pride ourselves on covering positive, important stories, events and people that make a difference in their communities. In addition to our monthly print edition, we run an online weekly supplement at www.thenorthsidechronicle.com.
Requirements:
- Ability to bus/drive to the Northside to cover events, do interviews and meet with us at our office (922 Middle St., Pittsburgh, PA 15212)
- Love of writing or desire to improve writing/communication skills
- Interest in talking to people and learning their stories

Pittsburgh Sports Report is seeking editorial interns (2-4 per semester), multimedia interns (1-2 per semester), radio interns (1 per semester) and high school football interns (1 every fall semester). The internships typically run January through April/May; May/June through August; and September through December, but these dates are flexible based on an intern’s schedule. Pittsburgh Sports Report, Inc. publishes three periodicals: a monthly sports tabloid (Pittsburgh Sports Report) and two monthly magazines for parents of young athletes (KidSPORTS Magazine-Pittsburgh and KidSPORTS Magazine-Ohio). The company also maintains three websites and various accompanying materials. Interns are expected to contribute to any and/or all of the publications, both hardcopy and/or online.
As a small company, interns are vital to Pittsburgh Sports Report. We spend hours interviewing interns and are very selective when making hires for this very reason. Interns are unpaid but will be given the chance to contribute at close to the same level as many of our more experienced freelance writers.
EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with typical duties related to (in order): website, print editions and increased attention to KidSPORTS Magazine.

Daily 5 is a sports-related internship dedicated to researching stories under very specific categories, providing Ellis Cannon with a set number of online stories each day and aiding with Facebook posts
Sports/Business (PCNC and Radio PA prep, sports business features for EllisCannon.com) interns will provide unique, somewhat obscure but interesting sports-business stories to Ellis Cannon for his Radio PA commentaries; research PCNC guests; and write in-depth sports-business features for EllisCannon.com using Radio PA commentaries as starting points.
PSR RADIO INTERNSHIP

- Writing recruiting profiles on local high school players
- Possibly attending games to assist beat writer and/or film crew
FOR ALL INTERNSHIPS
Requirements/skills desired:
- Ability to research feature stories, game recaps, previews, profiles and smaller sidebars outside the traditional realm of sports writing; research may consist of Internet research, phone interviews, person-to-person interviews and tracking down information, contacts and sources
- Ability to tailor writing styles for each publication
- Desire to learn and willingness to attack whatever stories are assigned
- PSR does not require a specific grade level or course completion, but interns are expected to have college-level experience in newspaper and/or magazine writing
- Experience with college or local publications is preferred but not required and coursework can, in some cases, be a reasonable substitute
- Travel is not required but is possible if agreed upon by both parties
- Interns will occasionally be required to work at the PSR offices in RIDC Park in Duquesne but the vast majority of work will occur on an intern’s own time away from the office

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking a multimedia and public outreach intern to assist local program coordinators in documenting and sharing activities and work accomplished by SCA high school crews.
The Student Conservation Association is a national organization dedicated to engaging young people in hands-on service to public lands. There are multiple SCA programs based in the downtown Pittsburgh office, and the intern will be working on multimedia outreach for two of these programs: the Leadership in the Environment Advancement Program (LEAP), which is a youth employment program, and the Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC), which is a volunteer program
This internship is designed to provide a quality multimedia work experience for the intern, who will have the opportunity to create a portfolio of professional work during the internship. The intern will be guided by a program coordinator with extensive experience in editing and visual arts but should be able to work independently, especially in the area of digital media. The intern will be provided with a desk, digital camera, and laptop during the internship. A light lunch or dinner will be provided for work days longer than three hours. Some weekend and evening work is required for a spring or fall internship, and the other hours are flexible. Total hours are 200 per semester (15 per week). Access to a car would be very helpful as some events take place outside the city. Specialized video equipment/video editing capacity should be obtained from the School of Communication at Point Park University.

The Veterans Breakfast Club (veteransbreakfastclub.com) in Pittsburgh is a young, fun, casual, caring and fast-growing nonprofit whose mission is to create communities of listening around World War II veterans and their stories. (Think StoryCorps, but live and in person.) We hold monthly storytelling breakfasts in four locations and conduct outreach sessions, interviews, and four trips per year around the country to historic sites and events. Almost 1,000 different individuals have attended our breakfasts in the past year.
Our executive director, Todd DePastino, is a noted historian and award-winning author of Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front and Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America.
We seek two interns who can work 15 hours per week, much of it independently. Each internship comes with a $1,000 stipend.
These internships represent a chance for two highly directed individuals to help the board and executive director shape its strategic direction.
Public Relations, Communications & Marketing Internship
Responsibilities:
- Creating and rolling out a marketing/PR plan for 2012.
- Serving as key PR liaison for the organization by connecting with local media, writing and distributing press releases and helping to compose a biannual newsletter.
- Serving as an ex-officio member of the VBC board of trustees.
- Creating a Twitter account and a Facebook page and making regular tweets and Facebook page updates.
- Writing blog posts for the Veterans Breakfast Club website previewing or reviewing events.
- Serving as a representative of the Veterans Breakfast Club in the community by attending occasional fairs and other gatherings where the organization’s mission can be communicated.
- Helping to plan and facilitate breakfasts and trips.

- Creating edited highlight videos that capture the stories of our World War II veterans.
- Serving as an ex-officio member of the VBC board of trustees.
- Redesigning and maintaining the Veterans Breakfast Club website.

Editorial and Fashion Internships
Spring 2012
Editorial and fashion interns must have an interest in magazines and publishing, the ability to use both PC and Mac platforms, working knowledge of AP style, and the ability to meet deadlines. Copy editing skills are also a plus. Primary duties include fact checking, research, event write–ups, clerical work, and database entry.
Interns who meet and exceed these requirements in the workplace will be given the opportunity to write larger profiles and features. Successful fashion interns will meet the above requirements in addition to managing small photo shoots of products and assisting on feature photo shoots.

WQED Pittsburgh is currently seeking student interns to work on locally produced television programs. This spring 2012 internship begins in January 2012 and runs through April 2012.
A television internship with WQED-TV provides students with a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn how local documentaries, public affairs and magazine-style programs are created from concept to shooting to editing to live and taped production. Student interns work in the field, studio and production offices of WQED-TV.
Junior and senior college students with a background in broadcast or media studies, communications or journalism are preferred but not required. Students who are seeking an internship to earn college credit are also preferred. This internship requires a time commitment of between 16 and 20 hours per week.

- Learning and practicing audio editing with Adobe Audition
- Learning and preparing content with Digital Audio Delivery System

- Training on WYPE Master Control broadcast equipment, including Master Control on-air board, ENCO, Adobe Audition, CD players, DAT machine, VCR, phone unit and microphone unit
- Maintaining and cataloging WYEP’s music library
- Studying how a daily “Mix” radio program is produced at WYEP
- Assisting in producing Weekday Mix shows and finding information for on-air use
- Maintaining databases for Mix features and archiving audio of in-studio performances
- Learning about WYPE programming philosophies, mission and audience development
- Administrative tasks such as aiding in station events on and off site, database entry, music cataloging and phone reception
