A:  Your computing needs are a matter of preference, cost and convenience.  return to top

Q: If I bring a laptop, will it be safe to leave in my room?
A: Laptops are susceptible to theft.  The University always strongly encourages its residents to lock their rooms when unoccupied.  It is also recommended that you purchase a laptop lock if bringing a laptop to campus.  return to top

Q: How do I get access to Point Park's network using my own computer?
A: Students who wish to have Internet access on residence hall computer must have an ethernet adapter installed in their computer and have their computer configured to work on our campus dorm network.  Any student needing to have an adapter installed and/or configured can contact the Computer Help Desk Office located in room 406 Academic Hall (ext. 3494) to schedule an appointment to have this service performed.  return to top

Q: Do I need to provide my own Ethernet cable and/or Ethernet card?
A:  Yes. The University's bookstore sells 14, 25 and 50 feet Ethernet cables.  The bookstore does not sell Ethernet cards.  return to top

Q: Do the residence halls have Internet access?
A: Yes. All residence halls have high-speed Internet access.  There is one Ethernet cable jack per resident in each room.  return to top

Q: If I do not bring a computer, are there computer labs available?
A: Yes.  Point Park University has 10 computer labs on campus and two Macintosh labs.  There are also public computers available on the lower level of Thayer Hall and the first floor of the University Center.  return to top

Q: What are the computer lab's hours?
A: Hours are currently Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..  Summer semester lab hours vary as needed.  The labs located in 208 and 212 Thayer Hall are open 24 hours in the Fall and Spring semesters.   return to top

Q: Should I bring my own printer?
A:  Your printing needs are a matter of preference, cost and convenience.   return to top

Q: Are printers available in the computer labs?
A:  Yes. Students have access to the laser printers located in each of the University's computer labs.  Students can print up to 800 pages per semester and can pay for more pages as needed. Students have access to image scanners in room 208 Thayer Hall.   return to top

Q: Are wireless Internet connections available on campus?
A: Yes. All academic areas on campus have wireless connections available.

Q: When will I receive my Point Park user name, e-mail address and password?
A: Once you have registered for classes, the University's Center for Information Technology Services will send you your Point Park e-mail address and user account information.  Accounts are created on the 15th of each month beginning June 15.  return to top

Q: What is my Point Park user name, e-mail address and password?
A:  The information is as follows:

  • User Name:

    • First initial of your first name
    • First initial of your middle name (if middle name was provided)
    • First five letters of your last name

      Example:  Jane A Johnson
      User Name:  jajohns
  • E-mail Address:

    • User name followed by @pointpark.edu
    • Example:  jajohns@pointpark.edu
  • Password:

    • Last for digits of your social security number
    • First initial of your first name and first initial of your last name
    • Middle two digits of your social security number

      Example:  9876jj54
