PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University athletic department had nine of its sports teams named NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2011-12 school year as announced by the NAIA national office on July 19, 2012. NAIA Scholar Teams are those that have a team grade point average of 3.00 or higher, and nine of the Pioneers' 11 sports teams received the recognition.
The Point Park volleyball team took the honors of the highest team GPA in the Pioneers' athletic department at 3.52, and that narrowly edged the women's cross country team at 3.51. The men's cross country team was third in the department at 3.40, and that figure was best among the men's sports at the school.
In all, there were 741 sports teams in the NAIA that were named NAIA Scholar Teams. Fifteen percent of those had team GPAs above 3.50, and the Point Park volleyball and women's cross country teams fell within that range.
Below is a breakdown of Point Park's NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2011-12 school year:
|Women's Cross Country||3.51|
|Men's Cross Country||3.40|
** Team GPA as calculated for the NAIA Scholar Team award includes the cumulative GPAs of every student-athlete on the roster for the 2011-12 school year. Point Park baseball came in at 2.93 and men's basketball at 2.70.
