Joe Cox, a senior pitcher on the Point Park University baseball team, is this week's featured athlete. Cox is a 6-3 left-hander from Swissvale, Pa., and the graduate of Pittsburgh Central Catholic had a strong showing on last week's spring trip to Florida.
Cox tossed a three-hit shutout to give Point Park (4-5) its first win of the season by blanking Davenport (Mich.), 9-0. Cox recorded the second shutout of his career by striking out six and walking one in seven innings. Cox, who has nine complete games in 23 career starts, improved to 2-0 by picking up the victory in a 14-4 win over William Penn (Iowa) on the final day of the trip. Cox worked the first two innings and left with a 5-2 lead.
Opponents are batting just .172 against Cox so far this year. As a freshman, Cox had a 3.69 earned-run average when he logged a career-high 11 starts and 63.1 innings. Injuries limited him to a combined 10 starts over the last two years, but he has proven to be a strong pitcher when healthy.
