PITTSBURGH -- Second baseman Tom Birko and starting pitcher Manny Perdomo took home the KIAC baseball weekly awards for April 22-28 after leading the Pioneers to the KIAC Tournament championship at the plate and on the mound.
Birko, a junior second baseman from Kennedy Twp., Pa., hit .428 (6 for 14) with a team-high nine RBIs in the three tournament games. Birko came up big with clutch RBIs throughout the weekend to lead the Pioneers to a 3-0 sweep and a berth in the NAIA Opening Round May 9-13.
Birko hit safely in all three games and had at least two RBIs each day. He started the tournament going 3 for 5 with five RBIs in a 22-4 win over Berea. Perhaps Birko's biggest hits came in the championship game when he was 2 for 4 with two RBIs -- including the eventual game-winning RBI, in an 8-6 win over Indiana Southeast.
For the year, Birko is hitting .373 with 56 hits, and he is among the KIAC leaders with 40 RBIs, a figure that is second on the team.
Perdomo pitched the Pioneers to an important, 10-4 win over Indiana Southeast in the semifinals of the KIAC Tournament to earn KIAC Pitcher of the Week honors for third week in a row. The junior right-hander from Miami, Fla., went all nine innings, struck out nine and walked one in the winner's bracket final.
Perdomo scattered eight hits and limited IU Southeast to four runs in his first nine-inning complete game of the year. It was the continuation of a hot few weeks for Perdomo, who was the NAIA National Pitcher of the Week last week after throwing a no-hitter that was nearly a perfect game.
Perdomo is 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA on the year. He has 52 strikeouts in 56.2 innings, and opponents are hitting .214 off of him.
