PITTSBURGH -- Sophomore right-hander Alex Mateo has repeated as KIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week March 10-16 by throwing a 1-hitter at IU Southeast on March 15, the conference announced on Monday (March 17).
Mateo has won the weekly award for the second week in a row, and it is the third time in three weeks this season that a member of the Point Park pitching staff took home the honor with ace Manny Perdomo winning the award in Week 1.
Mateo's latest gem came in a 7-1 victory this past Saturday, and it was his second 1-hitter in a row. In Saturday's win, Mateo didn't allow a hit out of the infield, and a bloop, infield hit that settled between home and first base was the only thing that kept it from being a no-hitter.
The Miami, Fla., native struck out six, walked one and did not give up an earned run. The only run scored after two errors and a double play in the bottom of the seventh. The only walk came in a 12-pitch at bat.
Mateo, who transferred this year from Broward (Fla.) College, currently has a streak of 21 straight innings without giving up an earned run. Prior to his start at IU Southeast, he had thrown two shutouts in a row. Mateo leads the KIAC with an ERA of 1.78 and an opponent's batting average of .181.
Point Park is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll and has its home opener on Wednesday versus Penn State-Greater Allegheny.
