OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Brescia (Ky.) University once again used the big inning to take two more games from Point Park University, 8-3 and 5-4, on Saturday to complete a sweep of the KIAC baseball series.
Brescia (23-10, 7-1 KIAC) scored all eight of its runs the first two innings to win the opener and then came back to win the nightcap with all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bearcats had only two hits all day that didn't come in the first or second inning of Game 1 or the sixth inning of Game 2, but it was enough to win both games.
Brescia put up four runs in both the first and second inning of the opener. Eight of the Bearcats' nine hits came in those innings with Hank Stewart and Aaron King each driving in two runs with base hits in the first inning. Nick Wolterman's two-RBI double with two outs in the second was the big hit in that inning.
Point Park starter Alex Mateo (3-2) went the distance and took the loss. He gave up only one hit his last four innings of work.
Point Park totaled six hits with Javy Marticorena going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Marticorena singled and scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth to get the Pioneers on the board for the first time. He also delivered an RBI double in the fifth to cut the score to 8-3.
Earlier in the fifth, Shane Conley doubled for one of his two hits and scored on Yuliecer Arias' base hit. But that was all the scoring for the Pioneers as winning pitcher Zach Sciaccotta got the win in six innings for Brescia (Ky.).
In Game 2, Point Park strung together seven hits in the third inning to score four runs and build a 4-0 lead. After Michael DeJesus doubled and Arias singled to produced the first run, two more runs scored when Oscar Romero doubled and Martircorena singled.
Arias and Romero were both 3 for 4 to lead the offensive attack, and Jordan Crowell had a pair of hits, including an RBI single to cap off the third inning.
Point Park starter Nathan Sphon (2-2) gave up only one hit the first five innings while holding on to the 4-0 lead. Although he was charged with the loss with the five runs scoring in the bottom of the sixth, only three of those were earned, and it was the tying and go-ahead runs that were unearned.
Brescia's rally started with Alex Hegge's RBI single and Hank Stewart's RBI double to cut it to 4-2. After reliever Toby Eigner threw a wild pitch to allow Stewart to score with one out, a two-out single by Aaron King drove in two for the eventual winning runs. An error earlier in the inning kept things going long enough for that go-ahead hit.
Point Park out-hit Brescia, 12-6, and Bearcats starter Christian McHatton went five innings with 10 hits and four walks.
