No. 1 seed Point Park beats No. 4 Berea in KIAC Baseball Tournament, 6-2
April 24, 2014
KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Manny Perdomo pitched eight innings to get the victory, and Javy Marticorena hit a two-run homer to lead No. 1 seed Point Park University to a 6-2 win over No. 4 seed Berea (Ky.) College in the KIAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
It was the first game of the tournament for Point Park (36-13, 16-4 KIAC), which is ranked No. 23 in the NAIA and had a bye in the first round. The Pioneers advance to the winner's bracket final on Friday, April 25 at 12 p.m. versus No. 3 seed IU Southeast (31-21), which is 2-0 in the tournament after beating No. 2 Brescia, 9-1, on Friday.
Point Park had enough hitting to beat Berea (21-22), especially when Marticorena's two-run home run highlighted a three-run fifth inning that put the Pioneers ahead, 5-1. The inning also included an RBI single from Tom Birko, who was 2 for 4 with a double.
Birko's two hits bumped his career hit total to 212, and he needs four more hits to tie the all-time, Point Park career hits record held by Mike D. Smith (1997-00) with 216.
Shane Conley delivered a two-out single in the Point Park eighth to increase the lead to 6-2.
Point Park had tied the score up at 1-1 when Oscar Romero drove in a run on a groundout in the first inning. A walk to Birko followed by a groundout by Yuliecer Arias and a sacrifice bunt by Marticorena set up the tying run.
Perdomo went eight strong innings to improve to 8-1. The senior from Miami, Fla., struck out eight, walked two and scattered eight hits.
Berea took a 1-0 lead when it manufactured a run in the top of the first, but Perdomo held the Mountaineers scoreless the next five innings before a sacrifice fly by Blake Crowe in the seventh cut the Point Park lead to 5-2.
Point Park closer Toby Eigner pitched a scoreless ninth inning with no hits and one strikeout in a non-save situation. Marticorena got the inning started off well with a sliding grab in right field to rob Logan Hunt of extra bases.
Mikey Scott was the starting pitcher for Berea, and he also batted fifth in the batting order. It was the first start of the year, and the sixth appearance for Scott, who gave up five hits and five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. He was lifted after Marticorena went deep. Lance Sheets pitched the final 3.2 innings and limited Point Park to one run on two hits.
The winner of the Point Park-IU Southeast matchup on Friday will advance to the championship round on Saturday at 1 p.m. The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament. Point Park swept the season series with IU Southeast with four victories on the road.
Point Park and IU Southeast also played in the 2013 KIAC Tournament winner's bracket final, which was won by Point Park. The teams met again in the tournament finals, and it was Point Park that came away with the championship.
