Oct. 9, 2009
LATROBE, Pa. - Point Park University split an exhibition baseball doubleheader Friday at St. Vincent. The Pioneers scored four runs in the final inning to win the nightcap, 9-5, and St. Vincent won the opener, 5-4, in its last at bat.
The second game ended after six innings due to rain, but in the top of the inning, a two-run double by senior Brandon Haburjak (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) gave the Pioneers the lead for good. Freshman Dillon Haire (North Port, Fla./North Port) added a two-run single to make it a four-run game.
In addition to his two RBIs, Haburjak had two hits and scored two runs. Haburjak also had two hits in the first game.
Senior Dan Campbell (Baldwin/Baldwin), who was 2-for-3 in each game, had two doubles and two RBIs in the nightcap. Freshman Tom Birko (Robinson/Montour) was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a stolen base.
Sophomore Mike Palmer (Scott Township/Chartiers Valley) earned the victory in four innings of relief. Starter Nick Merich (Peters Twp./Peters Twp.), a sophomore, did not give up a hit in two innings of work.
In the first game, St. Vincent erased a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. A double and a triple to start the inning tied the score at 4-4, and a sacrifice fly produced the winning run.
Seniors Joe Cox (Swissvale/Central Catholic) and Seth Martin (Verona/Penn Hills) each pitched three innings before giving way to Merich in the seventh.
Point Park had taken a 4-3 lead on Birko's two-run double in the sixth.
Point Park is currently conducting workouts this fall. Friday's exhibition games marked the first action for the Pioneers under new coach Loren Torres, who was hired in July.
