Point Park drops doubleheader to Bethel (Ind.) on second day of Florida trip

March 1, 2010

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Point Park University dropped both games of a baseball doubleheader versus Bethel (Ind.) on the second day of the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational Monday afternoon.

Point Park (1-3) lost the first game, 13-1, and Bethel (2-4) broke the game open with eight runs on five hits in the fourth inning. The first game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

In the second game, Bethel built leads of 4-0 and 6-1, and although Point Park battled back to cut it to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth, the Pilots went on to win, 7-4.

Point Park was held to five hits in the opener by winning pitcher Jerrod Long, who pitched all five innings.

The only real threat that Long faced came in the third inning when Brian Grise (Munhall/Steel Valley) singled and scored on a base hit by Ricky Cordido (Caracas, Venezuela). The next batter, senior Dan Campbell (Baldwin/Baldwin), ripped a single to right field, but Cordido was cut down at the plate to end the inning with Point Park trailing, 3-1.

Bethel extended the lead to 5-1 with two runs in the fourth before sending 13 men to the plate during their eight-run fifth inning. The Pilots had three RBI doubles in a row to finish off the fifth, which included five of their 11 hits.

In the second game, both teams had 10 hits, but Bethel took advantage of two Point Park errors to win by three runs. The Pioneers made both of their errors in the first inning, which allowed Bethel to take a 2-0 lead. Branden Robbins delivered the big hit of the inning – a two-run single with one out.

In the third, Bethel’s Jon Rolon stroked a two-run double to give the Pilots a 4-0 lead. The next inning, an RBI double by Reid Spitaels and a run-scoring single by Garrett Curless built a 6-1 edge for Bethel.

Dave Angle (Pittsburgh/Pine-Richland) led off the Point Park fourth inning with a triple to left center, and he scored on a balk to cut the Bethel lead to 4-1. The Pioneers went on to load the bases with one out, but two fly outs ended the threat, and Point Park still found itself down by three runs.

Point Park starter Derek Peluso (Zelienople/Seneca Valley), a sophomore right-hander, went four innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Four of the six runs he gave up were earned, and he left the ball game trailing, 6-1.

The Pioneers put together a three-run rally in the sixth. With two outs and runners at first and second, Grise delivered the third single of the inning to bring home two runs. Two batters later, Cordido stroked an RBI single to cut it to 6-4.

In his second inning in relief of Peluso, Point Park freshman righty Sam Bickford (Allison Park/Hampton) gave up an RBI double to Robbins, which provided Bethel with a 7-4 cushion.

Point Park’s Bryce Pfeuffer (Robinson Twp./Montour) was 3 for 4 in the second game, and he got a base hit with two outs and no one on in the top of the seventh. Frank Marko (Robinson Twp./Montour) followed with a walk, but the next batter was retired on strikes to end the game.

Point Park continues action Tuesday with a doubleheader versus Concordia (Mich.) at 1 p.m.
