PITTSBURGH – Point Park University baseball coach Loren Torres has announced his 2011-12 recruiting class, one that he hopes will help the program continue its quest to compete nationally in the NAIA.

The Pioneers experienced a big turnaround in 2011. They were 38-13 overall, were ranked No. 23 in the final NAIA baseball poll, won the American Mideast Conference regular season title, made a trip to the AMC Tournament finals and narrowly missed an at-large bid to the national tournament. All of that was after a 13-26 record the year before.

“We begin each season expecting to win, and this year will be no different,” said Torres, who is entering his third year at Point Park. “We’re very excited about this class and our team. We have better talent, there’s more baseball savvy and there’s no acceptance for losing mixed in with a desire to stand tall at the final out.

“We have quality arms coming in with this class that will complement our already solid pitching staff. We also have impact hitters who will fill holes left by seniors Dave Angle, Kyle Lucot, Bryce Pfeuffer, Frank Marko and Brian Grise. Those seniors provided more than talent to our ball club; they provided leadership and relentless mental toughness. We have the talent coming in, and it will be our job as coaches to make sure that the product we put on the field showcases as much mental toughness and leadership as the group we graduated. I am looking forward to the challenges that the 2012 season will bring.”

The Pioneers must replace five position starters that were lost to graduation. Point Park’s starting pitching staff returns intact along with its top relievers out of the bullpen.
