BOX SCORE 1 , BOX SCORE 2

Cougars (21-13, 7-5 AMC) took the first game, 6-5, after Travis McInerney hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Point Park (8-25, 2-18 AMC) lost the second game, 7-4, after falling behind by a score of 7-3 after two innings.

With the victories, Mt. Vernon Nazarene completed a weekend sweep of Point Park. The series started Thursday with the Cougars winning by scores of 5-4 and 4-2 at Point Park.

Point Park trailed game one, 5-2, but it scored three runs in the top of the sixth to tie things up. A key hit in the rally was an RBI double by Lee Bodnar (Chartiers/Chartiers Valley), and the Pioneers took advantage of two errors to score a couple of unearned runs in the inning.

Bryce Pfeuffer (Robinson Twp./Montour) had two of Point Park's six hits, including an RBI single that gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. An inning earlier, Ricky Cordido (Caracas, Venezuela) had stroked a run-soring single to put the Pioneers ahead, 1-0.

The 6-5 loss represented the eighth time that Point Park lost an AMC game by one run. In addition, it was the fifth time that Point Park's opponent won an AMC game in its final at bat.

Point Park's Joe Cox (Swissvale/Central Catholic) took the game-one loss in a complete-game effort. The senior lefty struck out two, walked one and gave up 11 hits. Cox is 4-3 on the year.

The Cougars got five innings out of starter Caleb Wright while relievers Justin Brown and Darren Athey pitched one inning each. Athey picked up the victory by working a scoreless seventh.

In the second game, Mt. Vernon scored five in the first inning and two in the second to go ahead, 7-3.

Point Park got on the board early with an RBI single by Robert Munoz in the first. An outfield error allowed another run to score as the Pioneers led, 2-0.

But Ian Durbin provided the Cougars with the key hit in the bottom of the inning -- a three run double to close out the inning.

Pfeuffer, who was 3 for 4 in the second game, drove in a run with a ground out in the second to make it 5-3. But Mt. Vernon Nazarene extended the lead to 7-3 when Steve Williams delivered a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

Point Park totaled 10 hits, including an RBI single from Pfeuffer in the fourth. The Pioneers touched Cougars's starter Grant Martin for nine hits in five innings.

The Cougars once again got great bullpen work -- something they had all series. Jacob Decker and Athey each worked a scoreless inning to finish things off, and Athey picked up the save.

In three relief appearances in the series, Athey was 2-0 with a save.

Point Park starter Derek Peluso (Zelienople/Seneca Valley) went all seven innings. He struck out six, walked three and six of the seven hits he gave up came in the first two innings.

After Mt. Vernon went up, 7-3, Peluso retired 10 batters in a row.
