Point Park just outside the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll
April 12, 2011
Point Park, which ranks sixth in the NAIA in winning percentage, received 104 votes. Madonna (25-10) is ranked No. 25 after receiving 109 votes and is the only new team to enter this week's rankings. Madonna replaced York (Neb.), which was No. 22 last week but is just behind Point Park this week. After York with 102 votes, there is a drop off in votes as Culver-Stockton was next with 55.
Among the five teams that have a better winning percentage than Point Park are No. 1 Lee (Tenn.), No. 2 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and No. 3 Oklahoma City. Point Park was 4-1 last week to move up three postions higher than it was in the previous poll.
Point Park has won 14 of 16 games, ranks seventh in the NAIA in runs allowed per game (3.16) and ranks eighth in the nation in team batting average (.342). The Pioneers were ranked as the top team in the American Mideast Conference for the second week in a row Monday. Point Park leads the AMC in hitting and fielding and is second in ERA.
The Pioneers are scheduled to host Penn State-Greater Allegheny for a home doubleheader on Wednesday (12 p.m.) before playing Mt. Vernon Nazarene (7-1 AMC) for an AMC series this weekend.
The Pioneers were 13-26 last year and need only one victory to double last year's win total. Second-year head coach Loren Torres has Point Park with its most wins since it broke the 30-win barrier a decade ago.
