Top seed Point Park will await Loser of Game 1 in AMC Baseball Tournament
May 2, 2011
PITTSBURGH -- Top seed Point Park University will await the loser of the opening game to learn its first opponent in the American Mideast Conference baseball tournament to be held May 3-5.
The Pioneers (36-11, 14-6 AMC), ranked #23 in this week's NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll (May 3), earned the right to host the three-team, double-elimination tournament, but the event will be held at #2 seed Mt. Vernon Nazarene University the first two days. The #2 Cougars open tournament play versus #3 Malone Tuesday, May 3 at 3 p.m. with the loser playing Point Park Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
The tournament also dictates that Point Park will play the winner of the opening game in the third contest of the tourney. The remaining schedule after those three initial games is TBA. One thing for certain, however, is that Point Park will be the host for the championship round Thursday at 1 p.m. if the Pioneers were to advance that far.
Point Park earned the right to host the event by virtue of its regular season title. However, in an effort to get the games played before the NAIA mandated completion deadline, the tournament will be moved to #2 seed Mt. Vernon Nazarene University for the first two days.
The change of venue for the first two days was made because of forecasted rain in Pittsburgh for much of the early part of the week and even into the scheduled tournament days. Another factor is MVNU's artificial surface, which is better equipped to handle any rain that may occur. The main concern of tournament organizers is to play the necessary amount of games to crown a proper champion before the NAIA's mandated completion day of Saturday, May 7.
The weather in Pittsburgh is expected to improve by Thursday, which would allow the championship round to take place on Point Park's home turf.
