March 9, 2012
LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. -- Point Park University beat Trinity Christian (IL) College, 9-2, on Friday to conclude its trip to the Russ Matt Central Florida Baseball Invitational and will take a 13-3 overall record to its home opener March 14 vs. PSU-Beaver (12 p.m.) at Green Tree Park.
Game two of Friday's doubleheader versus Trinity Christian (3-4) was rained out and will not be made up, so the Pioneers' stay in Florida is over.
Point Park (13-3) was 7-2 on its Florida trip, which was scheduled for 10 games. One of the wins was a forfeit victory, so the Pioneers played eight games in all.
Derek Peluso got the complete-game victory for the Pioneers on Friday. The senior right-hander from Zelienople, Pa., improved to 2-0 on the year by picking up a career-high 13 strikeouts. Peluso walked two and allowed only four hits and one earned run.
Point Park totaled 13 hits with Javier Marticorena going 3 for 4 and Marlon Leyva 3 for 5. Ossie Alfonzo and Steve Dujka each had two hits and two RBIs, and Rob Novia drove in two runs.
The Pioneers were up, 4-0, after three times and bat and extended things to 9-1 with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
