PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University's Derek Peluso and Javier Marticorena were named the American Mideast Conference Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for March 12-18, it was announced late this week.
Peluso and Marticorena had their names submitted as nominees for the national pitcher and player of the week that was awarded by the NAIA office on Tuesday.
Peluso, a senior right-hander from Zelienople, Pa., had a very strong pitching performance in the Pioneers' 3-0 win at Salem International March 18. The Seneca Valley High School grad went seven scoreless innings, gave up just one hit, struck out 10 and walked two.
For the year, Peluso is 3-0 in four starts with a 3.52 ERA. He has 26 strikeouts and six walks in 23.0 innings, and 23 of his strikeouts have come in hits past two outings.
Marticorena, a sophomore right fielder from Miami, Fla., hit .500 (7 for 14) with two doubles, a homer and six RBIs in five games last week. The transfer from NAIA St. Thomas (FL) University turned in three mult-hit games on the week.
A highlight of Marticorena's week was going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a homer in Point Park's 9-5, comeback win at Salem International March 17. He followed that up the next day by going 2 for 4 and driving up two key runs in the 3-0 victory. Marticorena is hitting .366 with four home runs and 20 RBIs so far this year.
