PITTSBURGH – Designated hitter/catcher Marlon Leyva and starting pitcher Derek Peluso were selected the American Mideast Conference Baseball Player & Pitcher of the Week for games played April 9-15, the league announced Monday (April 16).

Leyva is a junior from Miami, Fla., and Florida Christian High School. Peluso is a senior right-hander from Zelienople, Pa., and Seneca Valley High School. It is the second time this year that Peluso got the AMC, weekly honor.

Leyva was the best hitter for NAIA No. 10 Point Park (36-7, 8-0 AMC) last week when he hit .500 (9 for 18) in six games. Leyva split his time between DH and catcher and led Point Park to a 5-1 week with plenty of key hits and a total of three RBIs.

A transfer from NAIA St. Thomas (Fla.) University this year, Leyva hit safely in all six games and turned in three multi-hit games. For the year, Leyva is hitting .358, which is third on the team among the regulars. He has seven doubles, a home run and 21 RBIs.

Although not a part of last week’s resume, Leyva’s current, seven-game hitting streak started at Malone April 7 when his two-run single provided the winning runs in the seventh inning of a 4-2 win.

Peluso, Point Park’s No. 1 pitcher, continued his strong season as maybe the top hurler in the AMC. He beat Walsh last Friday (April 13), 3-1, with seven strikeouts and one walk. He went 6.1 innings, scattered eight hits, and the only mistake he made was a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.

For the year, Peluso is 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 48.0 innings. He has made eight appearances with two complete games, and opponents are hitting .243 against him. Peluso has 55 strikeouts and 14 walks on the season. A four-year starter, Peluso is 15-10 with a 4.48 ERA in 176.2 career innings.

Point Park’s next game is Wednesday vs. Salem International. The non-conference game will begin at 1 p.m. at Green Tree Park.
