PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University sophomore second baseman Tom Birko has been named the American Mideast Conference Baseball Player of the Week for hitting .583 from April 16-22. The award was announced Wednesday by the league.
Birko, from Kennedy Twp., Pa., and Montour High School, was 7 for 12 (.583) with seven RBIs and five runs to help NAIA No. 10 Point Park (40-7, 11-0 AMC) to a 4-0 showing last week.
Birko, the starting second baseman and leadoff hitter, led the Pioneers to a clinch of the AMC Regular Season Title with last weekend's three-game sweep of Fisher. The week also included a rout of Salem International, 17-0, on Wednesday.
Birko, who is 5-10 and 180 pounds, hit safely in all four games last week and turned in two multi-hit games. He was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the win over Salem. The highlight of his weekend was going 2 for 3 with two RBIs in a 10-2 win versus Fisher.
He is fourth on the team with a .336 batting average and despite being the leadoff hitter, he is tied for the team lead with 34 RBIs. Birko is third on the team with 10 doubles and has a team-high seven stolen bases in nine attempts.
Defensively, Birko played error-less ball last week and started two double plays. He has not made an error in seven games and has just one in his last 13 games.
