PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University had three players make the Capital One (R) Academic All-District Baseball First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday (May 3).
Senior Derek Peluso (RHP, 3.60 in Economics & Finance), junior Sean Clark (RHP, 3.4 in Biological Sciences) and sophomore Tom Birko (2B, 3.65 in Sports, Arts & Entertainment Management) were each selected in District 1 of the College Divsion, which is for NAIA and Junior Colleges.
Not only do Peluso, Clark and Birko get it done in the classroom, they are all important starters for the Pioneers. Peluso and Clark are the teams No. 1 and 2 pitchers, respectively, and Birko is the starting second baseman. Those three are big reasons why Point Park is 47-8 overall and ranked No. 10 in the NAIA this week.
Peluso, from Zelienople, Pa., is 8-1 with a 2.28 ERA this year. He has a team-high 67 innings pitched and 67 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .244 against him. Peluso has been a starter all four years and the No. 1 option the last two years.
Clark, from Titusville, Pa., is 6-0 with a 2.55 ERA as a junior. In 53 innings pitched, Clark has 40 strikeouts and just six walks. Opponents are hitting only .239 off of the transfer from Duquesne University.
Birko, from Kennedy Twp., Pa., entered this weekend hitting .329 and ranking second on the team with 39 RBIs. As the Pioneers' leadoff hitter, he has a team-high nine stolen bases.
To be eligibe, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 GPA, be a starter or important reserve and be nominated by their school's SID. Nominess are voted upon by members of CoSIDA, and those with the best combination of on-field and classroom credentials are selected.
All three players earned Capital One (R) Academic All-District Baseball First Team honors for the first time in their careers. They will now have their names advance to the next stage of voting, which is for the Capital One (R) Academic All-American Baseball Team.
