Point Park baseball coach Loren Torres named 2012 Collegiate Manager of the Year

PITTSBURGH – Point Park University baseball head coach Loren Torres was named the 2012 Collegiate Baseball Manager of the Year by the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh at the 6th Annual Chuck Tanner Awards on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Rivers Club, Downtown.
Torres, who is in his fourth year at Point Park, received the prestigious honor by leading Point Park to a 53-11 record and a fifth-place finish at the NAIA World Series last spring. Point Park set a school record for wins in a season and reached the NAIA World Series for the 11th time in school history.
Other awardees at the banquet were Co-Winners of the 2012 Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager of the Year award Davey Johnson of the Washington Nationals and Bob Melvin of the Oakland A’s.
Pittsburgh native Sean Casey received the Chuck Tanner Community Service Award. The Master of Ceremonies will be Paul Alexander of 93-7 The Fan.
Other awards for Torres after the Pioneers’ historic season were American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year and American Baseball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year. Torres was the AMC Coach of the Year the last two years. He will receive his ABCA Regional Coach of the Year award Jan. 4, 2013 at the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet as part of the ABCA national convention at the Chicago Regency Hotel.

Everything begins with a cocktail reception at 5:30 pm. Erie native and nationally recognized celebrity sports artist Kevin-John will be creating a special limited edition work of art featuring Manny Sanguillen, which all attendees will receive. The unveiling of the art work will be at 6:00 pm, followed by a dinner and banquet at 6:30 pm. The Master of Ceremonies will be Paul Alexander of 93.7FM “The Fan” sports talk radio. There will be silent and live auctions with James Roddey, former Allegheny County Executive, acting as the auctioneer.
The event will help the Pittsburgh Rotary Club operations and Foundation to sustain the following programs:
- Annual High School Ethics Symposium
- Scholarships for graduating high school students
- Student of Distinction program
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program
- Monthly New Citizens Reception
