PITTSBURGH – Point Park University freshman left-hander Nathan Spohn has been named the American Mideast Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 2-8. The native of Greensburg, Pa., picked up a complete-game victory for the Pioneers (31-6) on April 7 at Malone.

Spohn, a 5-foot-7 product of Greensburg Salem High School, improved to 4-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 3.09 by beating Malone (17-13), 4-2, last Saturday. Spohn scattered seven hits, gave up two runs, struck out three and walked one in the seven-inning effort. The victory allowed Point Park to salvage a victory after losing the first three games of the four-game series with Malone.

Spohn is a transfer from West Chester University, and he is still a freshman because he did not compete for the Golden Rams last year. He is a former WPIAL all-section pitcher at Greensburg Salem, where he was also a standout in football as a quarterback and defensive back.

Spohn is part of a Point Park pitching staff that currently ranks ninth in the NAIA in team ERA at 2.86. He has worked his way into the No. 4 starting pitcher role with a few strong outings in a row. In his previous start before the Malone win, he shut out Houghton, 7-0, on four hits over seven innings.

Point Park was ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Baseball Top 25 Poll April 3. The next poll comes out April 10 at 6 p.m. ET. The Pioneers visit Clarion April 10 (1 p.m.) and travel to Glenville State April 11 (2 p.m.).
