Grunn places 17th, narrowly misses freshman record to lead Pioneers at Waynesburg

Sept. 12, 2009

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Dylan Grunn placed 17th at the Waynesburg Invitational to lead the Point Park University men's cross country team to a fifth place finish Saturday. There were seven teams at the meet.

"Both teams ran extremely well," said Point Park's fifth-year coach Jim Irvin. "This was the best both teams have looked in five years. Every men's runner improved their times from last week by at least one minute."

Grunn (Honesdale/Abington Heights) was four seconds shy of matching at Point Park freshman record and placed 17th.  Grunn turned in a time of 28 minutes, 20 seconds in the five-mile race, which was slightly slower than teammate Reuben Rono's performance (28:16) at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational last year.

Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya) placed third at Pitt-Greensburg a year ago to post the fastest time by a freshman. On Saturday, Rono was the Pioneers' second runner to cross the finish line with a time of 29:10.

Andrew Witchey (Lower Burrell/St. Joseph) posted a 30:03, Jared Ferree (White Oak/Faith Christian) had a 30:30, and Chris Kennedy (Columbiaville, Mich./Lake Ville) finished with a time of 31:30.

The Pioneers did not enter the Waynesburg Invitational until early last week. Irvin added the meet to make up for the fact that his team had to withdraw from the St. Vincent Invitational Sept. 26 due to the Pittsburgh Summit. Because of the international event, Point Park will be closed Sept. 23-27.

Point Park competes in the Penn State-Behrend Invitational Saturday. The women's race is at 11 a.m. with the men's race to follow.
