Rowland, a junior from Pittsburgh who is in his first season at Point Park, won the award based on his championship at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational on Saturday. The transfer from Geneva College won the men’s 8K race with a time of 27:38, which was 12 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.

Rowland’s first victory of the year allowed the Pioneers to win the team title and best a field of eight schools. It was the first time that Point Park won a team title under sixth-year coach Jim Irvin, and Rowland is the first Point Park runner to win a race in over four years.

The AMC Cross Country Runner of the Week award is in its first season of existence, and Rowland is the fourth person to receive the honor this year.

After spending two seasons at Geneva, Rowland came to Point Park and immediately became the Pioneers’ No. 1 runner. He started the season strong with a fourth-place showing at Westminster with a season-best time of 26:49. Rowland has three top-four placements in four races with the other one being a second-place effort at St. Vincent with a time of 26:56.

Rowland and the Pioneers visit the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Schenley Park Saturday. Two weeks later is the Walsh Invitational, which is the last regular-season event before the AMC Championship Meet Nov. 6 at Houghton.
