PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University was picked fifth of 10 teams in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Preseason Poll released Thursday (Aug. 14) by the conference office.

Although the Pioneers were predicted in fifth place, the top four spots did not reflect a clear favorite as the nine first-place votes were spread across the top four teams.

Berea (Ky.), which ran away with the KIAC championship last year, has left the conference. IU East, which finished a distant second in the 2013 KIAC meet, is tabbed as the 2014 preseason favorite with 56 points and three first-place votes.

KIAC newcomer Rio Grande, which finished third in a very competitive Mid-South Conference last year, led the poll with four first-place votes and was second overall with 53 points.

The top four spots in the preseason poll are separated by just eight votes, and that continues with Asbury (Ky.) (49 points) and Brescia (Ky.) (48 points) in third and fourth place. Asbury and Brescia, which each got one first-place vote, begin the 2014 preseason in the same place their were at the end of 2013.

After Point Park in fifth with 39 points, there is a drop off in votes to IU Kokomo in sixth place with 30 points. The last three teams in the poll are Cincinnati Christian (23 points), Carlow (14 points) and Alice Lloyd (12 points).

Point Park returns three of its top five runners from last year, and the Pioneers took home sixth place of eight teams in the 2013 KIAC Meet. Point Park also has a large group of talented newcomers this year, who will make up a big change in the team's top seven performers.

The Pioneers open the 2014 season Aug. 29 at the Wooster (Ohio) Invitational.
