PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University freshman Eric Torres repeated as the KIAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday (Sept. 22), as announced by the KIAC office.
Torres, from Robstown, Texas, has now won the award three time this year, once after each of the three races the Pioneers have competed in so far this season. In three collegiate races, Torres has placed first at Wooster, fourth at Penn State-Behrend and second at St. Vincent this past weekend.
Torres' latest effort featured a time of 27:12 in the St. Vincent 8K to place second of 110 runners. Torres finished behind only Aaron Lauer of the University of Pittsburgh, who took first at 27:06.
Torres and Pitt's Lauer were in a two-man race before Lauer opened up a lead of a few seconds. When Lauer made a wrong turn and got lost, Torres went into first place. Not wanting to take the victory by way of Lauer's mistake, Torres waited so that Lauer could pass him.
Torres was comfortably in second place with a 17-second lead over the third-place finisher, also of Pitt. Torres and the Pioneers resume the season Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Lock Haven Invitational.
