WILMINGTON, Ohio -- With 38 teams and 373 runners in attendance, the Point Park University men's cross country team placed 25th at the Wilmington (Ohio) College Meet on Friday night.
There were plenty of KIAC teams competing, and Point Park was third of the six conference schools in attendance. Friday's meet provided a preview of sorts for the KIAC championship meet hosted by Point Park on Nov. 8 (2:30 p.m.) at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
Rio Grande asserted itself as the KIAC team favorite placing sixth at Wilmington, which was a very strong and deep meet. Indiana East placed 22nd as the second KIAC finisher followed by Point Park in 25th, Asbury (Ky.) in 28th, Indiana Kokomo in 31st and Cincinnati Christian in 37th.
Rio Grande also had the top KIAC individual finisher on Friday night, but the Red Storm's Dallas Guy was just three seconds ahead of Point Park's Eric Torres. Guy placed 24th with a time of 26;14 in the 8K. But the Pioneers' Torres, a freshman from Robstown, Texas, was right behind in 25th place at 26:17 for his top time of the year as the second KIAC placement.
Point Park's Heath Hougas (27:42) placed 106th, which was ninth among the KIAC runners in the field. Point Park's five-man team was finished out by Paul McCloud (30:15), Eric Engel (30:52) and Marvin Walker (32:52).
The Pioneers next meet is Oct. 25 at the Lock Haven University Go Fast River Run, which will provide the last tune-up before the KIAC championship meet Nov. 8 in Pittsburgh.
