Point Park Cross Country teams earn six Top-10s at Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's and women's cross country teams took home a total of six Top-10 finishes at the College of Wooster Invitational on Friday night. It was the first race of the season for the Pioneers, and the event featured four races with a men's 5K and 4-mile and a women's 5K and 4K.
There was no team scoring in the meet, which had seven school participate. But Point Park had its share of individual successes.
The highlight for Point Park was Eric Torres placing first in the men's 5K with a time of 16:38, which bested the field fo 57 runners by 13 seconds. Torres, a freshman from Robstown, Texas, was joined in the Top 10 by teammate Chris Hunt, a freshman from Kane, Pa., who placed ninth at 17:42.
Freshman Paul McCloud (18:05) placed 13th, junior Zane Kravec (18:48) placed 18th, and freshman John Wiley (18:53) placed 22nd to make up the top five for Point Park in the men's 5K.
The only Point Park men's runner to compete in the 4-mile race was Heath Hougas, a sophomore transfer from St. Norbert College. He placed ninth of 30 runners at 22:16.
The women's 5K had three Point Park runners place in the Top 10 with sophomore Kelsey Wilkins leading the way with a 21:22 for seventh place. Also earning Top-10 honors for the Pioneers were freshman Katie Guarnaccia (21:37) in eighth and Hanka Jiraskova (21:45) in ninth.
The 5K featured 29 runners, and Point Park placed five in the top 16 with Ashley Czerniewski-Hagan and Katie Johnston both finishing at 22:52.
The women's 4K had two participants from Point Park and 52 in all. Freshman Emily Maxwell placed 23rd with a time of 18:04 for Point Park.
The Pioneers are next in action Sept. 13 at the Penn State-Behrend Invitational in Erie, Pa.
