Point Park men's cross country opens season at Westminster, Rowland places 4th

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Newcomer Andrew Rowland placed fourth individually to lead the Point Park University men's cross country team at its 2010 season opener, Westminster's Fisher Invitational. As a team, the Pioneers placed 6th of 9 teams.

Rowland, a junior who transferred from Geneva this year, completed the 8K race is 26:49 to take fourth. The Fox Chapel, Pa., native was three seconds out of third place and 19 seconds out of second. Bill Jones of Franciscan won the men's race and beat the field by 44 seconds with time of 25:46.
Rowland's time of 26:49 is the best performance by a Point Park men's runner in the last four years.
In an exhibition race on Wednesday, Jones and Rowland finished 1-2 at Schenley Park.
Grove City was the team champion with 50 points followed by Alderson-Broaddus (67) and Franciscan (79). Point Park had 169 points, which was 30 points behind the 5th-place Hiram.
Point Park sophomore Dylan Grunn (Honesdale, Pa./Abington Heights) finished in 28th place with a time of 28:46. Junior Reuben Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya) finished in 29 minutes, 44 seconds for 58th place.
Other competitors for Point Park were Andrew Witchey (30:18), Jon Rohlf (31:01), Ian McIntosh (31:56), Jared Ferree (34:14) and Joe DeWitt (35:44).
Point Park competes next Saturday at the Waynesburg Invitaitonal, which starts at 11 a.m.
