WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Senior Dylan Grunn had the best race of his career as he placed second at the Waynesburg Invitational men's cross country meet Saturday (Sept. 8). Grunn lead the Point Park team to a 6th-place finish of 10 teams in their season-opening meet.
Grunn set a career-best time of 26:55 to break the 27-minute mark for the first time in his four years. Individual champion Scott Ryan (26:09) of Washington & Jefferson won the race by a wide margin of 46 seconds over the field.
But Grunn bested a pack of top runners from a talented California (Pa.) team to take second place. California easily won the team title by putting individual finishers in places three, four, five and six. The third- and fourth-place finishers -- Nicholas Pessa (26:57) and Nicholas Gibson (26:59) -- finished just seconds behind Grunn.
Grunn earned his 2nd-place finish by catching up the last 400 meters. In was in that distance that he out-kicked and passed the runners from California (Pa.). Grunn ended up averaging 5:25 per mile in the 8K race.
"Dylan ran a great race," said Point Park head coach Jim Irvin. "He has worked extremely hard, and he's flying right now. Scott (Ryan) is the most notable runner in this area, and the guys from Cal are very talented. If he stays healthy, Dylan is right there with them."
Point Park put up a team point total of 147 to place 6th of 10 teams. Freshman Zane Kravec (North Huntingdon, Pa.) placed 25th at 29:03 in his first career race. Junior Jon Rohlf (Brownsville, Pa.) finished 35th at 30:03, and freshman Eric Engel was right behind in 36th at 30:05. Sophomore Connor Mulvaney (30:26) and senior Chris Kennedy (31:21) were other top finishers for the Pioneers.
Point Park's next meet is Saturday, Sept. 15 at Penn State Behrend (11:45 a.m.)
