LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Point Park University junior Connor Mulvaney competed in the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship Meet on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence, Kan., and he finished with a time of 29:42.
A junior from Coraopolis, Pa., Mulvaney badly injured his knee during the 8K race, but he gutted it out to the finish line to finish in 311th place out of 313 runners. The time was well off the pace of what he ran at the KIAC Meet Nov. 9 to earn All-KIAC honors and qualify for nationals at 28:26.
Not only was Mulvaney battling injury, he and the other runners endured 23-degree temperatures and howling winds.
Mulvaney competed in the national meet for the first time in his career this year. He was the Pioneers' top runner in every meet that he competed in during the 2013 season.
The NAIA individual champion was Eric Avila from Southern Oregon with a time of 24:02, which was good for a pace of 4:50 per mile. Oklahoma City won the team title with 77 points, and Southern Oregon was second with 124 points.
