No. 22 Cedarville sinks Point Park men with 16 3-pointers

Jan. 30, 2010

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. - Cedarville, the No. 22 team in NAIA Division II, made 11 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes to propel itself to an 84-67 victory at Point Park in an American Mideast Conference men's basketball game at CCAC South Gymnasium Saturday.

Cedarville (15-7, 7- 2 AMC) led 51-28 at halftime and totaled 16 3-pointers on the day. Austin Foote led the outside shooting barrage by coming off the bench to knock down six treys and score 24 points. He had 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting from long range in the first half.

With Cedarville holding a 9-8 lead after four minutes, Foote came in the game and promptly hit four 3-pointers to give the Yellow Jackets a 30-14 lead with 9:21 left in the half. Before the half was through Foote connected twice more from long range, and his sixth trey of the game gave Cedarville a 43-23 lead at the 3:10 mark.

On the day, Cedarville was 16 of 35 (46 percent) from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets shot 39.5 percent (32 of 81) overall, and half of their field goals were 3-pointers.

Point Park (7-12, 3-7) had four players in double figures, but couldn't keep pace with its 38-percent shooting (28 of 74) from the floor and a 2-for-15 performance from downtown.

Freshman point guard T.J. Heatherington (McKeesport/Serra Catholic) registered his seventh 20-point effort in 17 games with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Pioneers. Heatherington (pictured) was 7 of 16 from the field and 6 of 7 from the foul line.

Jamar Washington (Pittsburgh/Peabody) scored a season-high 13 points and was joined in double figures by fellow starters Marcus Robinson (Pittsburgh/Allderdice) and Eric Johnson (Uniontown/Uniontown), who had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Point Park center Gerald Warrick (Penn Hills/Penn Hills) grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds and scored eight points, and the 6-7 senior is averaging 10.1 boards per game to lead the Pioneers.

Cedarville was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation earlier this year, but it dropped in the rankings after a 2-2 AMC start. Since then, the Yellow Jackets have won five conference games in a row.

Cedarville built a 60-30 lead with 15:05 to go, but then its shooting cooled off as Point Park got the final margin under 20 points. The Yellow Jackets shot 34 percent (12 of 35) the second half.

Point Park got as close as 15 points, 75-60, on a layup by Robinson with 4:10 remaining.

Cedarville's Ricardo Alliman, a 6-7 center who entered the game with averages of 17.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Alliman help the Yellow Jackets hold a 53-42 edge on the boards.

Brandon Sok came off the Cedarville bench to score 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc, and starter Matt Harner hit three treys and scored 11 points.

After taking the next four days off, Point Park visits Mt. Vernon Nazarene for an AMC game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers visit Shawnee State in a make-up game next Saturday at 12 p.m. The game was postponed due to inclement weather Jan. 9.
