PITTSBURGH – Point Park University rising senior T.J. Heatherington will play for PGT Trucking in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Summer Pro-Am League beginning tonight (June 18) at 7 p.m. at Green Tree SportsPlex. Heatherington, a point guard from McKeesport, Pa., and Serra Catholic High School, is the only NAIA player in the seven-team league that is made up mostly of NCAA Division I athletes.
PGT Trucking begins the summer league schedule June 18 vs. Steel City Tickets.com (7 p.m.). Admission is free and open to the public at Greentree SportsPlex. The league continues with the regular season every Monday and Wednesday night for the next three weeks. There are three games each night at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Playoffs are July 16-18.
Heatherington, who led the NAIA Division II in scoring (24.5 ppg) and was fourth in assists (6.2 apg) as a junior last year, is on a 10-player roster with four of the top players from Pitt. Heatherington is a three-year starter for Point Park and was named NAIA Division II First Team All-American and the American Mideast Conference Player of the Year in 2011-12.
Highlighting the PGT Trucking roster is Steven Adams (C), a seven-footer from New Zealand who is the most highly touted recruit for the Pitt Panthers in quite some time. Other top incoming Pitt players on the PGT team are Trey Zeigler (G/F), a transfer from Central Michigan, and James Robinson (G), an incoming freshman from DeMatha (Md.) Catholic HS who is billed as the Panthers’ point guard of the future. Lamar Patterson (G/F), a starter at Pitt, is also on the roster.
Heatherington is one of four guards on the roster, and Zeigler and Patterson are guard/forwards. Other guards include Amir Johnson, a point guard from Pittsburgh, Pa., who finished up his four-year career at Radford in 2009-10; Jake Matthews, a reserve guard at Cornell who starred at Greensburg Salem HS; and Pitt’s Robinson, who will not be at the games this week since he is playing for Team USA in the FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Brazil.
Rounding out the PGT Trucking roster are frontcourt players Lucky Jones and Stephan Hawkins from Robert Morris. Jones led the Colonials in rebounding last year, and Hawkins is an incoming freshman who is 6-9. Another forward is former IUP player Darryl Webb, the NCAA DII National Player of the Year in 2010-11 who is the school’s all-time leader in points and rebounds.
