ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Point Park University men's basketball team trailed Lourdes (OH) University, 28-8, after 12 minutes, and that early deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Pioneers lost, 73-71, Friday night in the first round of the Siena Heights University Maple City Tournament.
Robbie Heatherington came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points for Point Park (1-2), and Jimmy Taylor added 22. Heatherington scored 16 points in the first half, which accounted for more than half of his teams points at the break. He made 7 of 14 field goals overall, 5 of 10 from long range and was 5 of 5 from the line.
T.J. Heatherington chipped in 11 points and six assists, and Dante Anglin had a game-high 15 rebounds for Point Park. Ultimately, the Pioneers could not recover from 31-percent shooting the first half even though they outscored Lourdes, 63-45, the last 28 minutes.
Lourdes (3-2), an NAIA member located in Slyvania, Ohio, led, 43-31, at halftime after shooting 56 percent (18 of 32) the opening half. The Gray Wolves were 4 of 6 from 3-point range the first 20 minutes in building the lead.
Guard John Willhite led Lourdes with 15 points, and 12 of those came in the first half. John Washington scored 14 points with 11 coming the first 20 minutes. He knocked down all three of his treys before halftime. Corey Harvey, a 6-5 guard, added 14 points.
It was all Lourdes early as the Gray Wolves were ahead, 28-8, at the 8:38 mark of the first half. But then Point Park came alive and began to claw back spurred on by Heatherington. He made a couple of free throws to get the deficit into single digits, 37-29, with 57 ticks left in the half.
Although Lourdes bumped the lead up to 16, 49-33, early in the second half, the Pioneers went on a 13-0 run to cut it to 49-46 with 13:53 left.
Taylor, who made 4 of 8 3-pointers and 7 of 12 field goals overall, buried a couple of treys to give the Pioneers their first lead, 59-57, with 8:51 left.
The score was knotted a 64-64 with 4:25 to play when Lourdes made its move. The Gray Wolves got two straight inside baskets -- one by John Brown and the other by Washington -- and both of those came on second-chance opportunities. Harvey followed those buckets with a pair of free throws for a 70-64 advantage with 1:31 left.
Josh Pohlot then scored twice inside for Point Park to make it a 72-68 game with 28 seconds left. After Willhite made 1 of 2 free throws for Lourdes, Robbie Heatherington nailed a trey with 11 seconds left to make it 73-71.
Lourdes then missed the front end of a one-and-one, and although Point Park got the rebound, Lourdes retained possession after a foul.
Point Park rebounded to shoot 48 percent the second half and ended up at 40 percent (22 of 55) for the game. Lourdes shot 46 percent from the floor. The Pioneers led in rebounds, 40-32, and also committed more turnovers, 23-16.
Point Park continues play in the Siena Heights Maple City Tournament with the consolation game Saturday at 2 p.m. The Pioneers will face the loser of the Siena Heights-Marygrove game.
