OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The Point Park University men's basketball team continued its road struggles with an 89-69, KIAC loss at Brescia (Ky.) University on Sunday.
Point Park (7-8, 3-3 KIAC) beat Brescia at home, 82-79, on Dec. 14, but the Bearcats returned the favor on Sunday. Point Park is 5-1 at home, but it is now 1-5 on the road and 0-3 in KIAC road games this year.
Brescia used its hot shooting to make seven 3-pointers the first half and raced out to a 50-37 lead at halftime.
Point Park could not slow down the Bearcats after the break as they extended the lead even further with a 9-2 run out of the locker room for a 20-point edge, 59-39, with 16:04 remaining.
Brescia made 13 3-pointers on the day with another six treys after halftime, which helped them build the advantage up to 30 points during on stretch. Brescia shot 54 percent from the field and 37 percent (13 for 35) from long range.
Point Park shot a respectable 43 percent and made eight 3-pointers, but that could not keep up with the Bearcats. The Pioneers were further hurt by 19 turnovers -- compared to 12 for Brescia -- and by being out-rebounded, 33-28.
Brescia got a big boost from Austin Morris, a 6-7 foward who became an active player this semester. He did not play in the Dec. 14 loss at Point Park but came up with 29 points and 11 rebounds on an impressive 12 for 13 from the field and 4 for 5 from the foul line.
The Bearcats' perimeter attack was led by guard DeCarlos Collier with 17 points and 2 of 5 from distance, and Trey Howard, who came off the bench for 22 points on 6 of 10 from deep.
Point Park had a team-high 21 points from Gabe McNeal, who hit on 7 of 11 from the field and 2 of 5 treys. Nick Brown drained four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points. Matt Noszka totaled 12 points. Noszka had 11 of his 12 the first half, and McNeal scored 15 the first 20 minutes.
The score was close for much of the first half, and Brescia held a 33-31 lead with 6:36 before the break. But that's when Brescia hit some big 3-pointers to end the half on a 17-6 run. The 9-2 run to start the second half was capped off by a trey from Hunter Rowe.
Point Park will look to get some road wins on its weekend road trip Jan. 10-11. The Pioneers play at Berea (Ky.) on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and visit Alice Lloyd (Ky.) Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
