#22 JIMMY SHERWOOD
Guard, 6-2, 185 lbs., Senior
Hometown / High School: Sharon, Mass. / Thayer Academy
Previous Schools: Duquesne Univ., Arkansas Tech
Profile: Sherwood is a senior transfer who comes to Point Park for his final season of eligibility. An excellent student, he is slated to graduate this year as Point Park is giving him an excellent opportunity to finish his degree and his college basketball career on a high note. He started his career at nearby Duquesne Univ., an NCAA Division I school just a few miles from Point Park’s downtown Pittsburgh campus. The 6-2 guard from Sharon, Mass., played in 24 games and earned six starts in his three seasons with the Dukes. One of those seasons was a redshirt year of 2008-09, his final season at Duquesne. He spent his third year of college basketball at NCAA Division II Arkansas Tech last season. A smooth guard, with a strong build and a good shooting stroke, Sherwood shot 48% from the field and 57% from 3-point range at Duquesne. Sherwood will be counted on to produce in the Point Park backcourt and also provide leadership as one of the more experienced players on the roster. Sherwood’s athleticism and skill on both ends of the floor will fit in nicely with the Pioneers’ system, which is focused on high scoring and the transition game.
Prior to Point Park: Sherwood spent three years at Duquesne Univ. with six starts among his 24 games played. His most extensive playing time came as a freshman walk-on in 2006-07. He earned six starts in 16 games playing for first-year coach Ron Everhart that season. Sherwood averaged 11.1 minutes per game, and he shot an impressive 51% from the field. He connected on 11 of 19 3-pointers for a percentage of 58% from long range. He settled into a regular role late in the year as he appeared in each of the last 14 games. The best game of his career included a career-high 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting from long range vs. La Salle. In his final two years with the Dukes, he played in a combined eight games. One of those seasons was a redshirt in 2008-09, his last with the Dukes. Sherwood spent last season at Arkansas Tech, but he saw limited action after coming to a team that was already established. Arkansas Tech was ranked No. 1 in the final NCAA Division II regular season poll last year. Arkansas Tech was 30-2 last year and made it to the NCAA Division II national tournament. He played in 12 games total.
Prep school: Sherwood averaged 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game at Cushing Academy, a prep school in Ashburnham, Mass. He was named his team’s Offensive Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season.
High school: Sherwood averaged 17.0 points per game as a senior at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass. He was named all-league his last two years and had a career scoring average of 15.0 points per game.
