Elder one shot off the lead after 1st round of Mercyhurst tourney, Point Park 6th of 7

HARBOR CREEK, Pa. -- Point Park University sophomore Austin Elder shot a 3-under 69 Saturday in the first round of the Mercyhurst Invitational and is one shot off the lead going into Sunday's final 18 holes.

As a team, Point Park turned in a score of 302, which puts the Pioneers in 6th place out of seven teams.

Elder, a native of Warren, Ohio, and a graduate of Howland High School, turned in his career-best round to place him one shot in back of tournament leader Derek Baker of IUP.

Baker shot a 4-under 68 to lead three players who were under par. Evan Watkins from Mercyhurst is in third place after a first-round 70.

IUP is the team leader at 291, which is six strokes better than Mercyhurst.

Freshman Chris Bowen is tied for 23rd after shooting a 77 (+5). Point Park's next three players -- -- Alejandro Bernardini, James Daley and Chris Cichra -- are all tied for 30th after shooting 6-over 78.

Final round play at Downing Golf Club in Harbor Creek, Pa., is set for Sunday.
