PITTSBURGH – Point Park University men’s golf head coach Gabe Bubon has signed Youngstown, Ohio, native Jerry Ferrell to play for the Pioneers. Ferrell, from Boardman High School, will be a freshman at Point Park in the fall of 2011.

Ferrell was a four-year member of the boys’ golf team at Boardman. He was the No. 3 man his senior season when he had a scoring average around 39.5. More recently, his USGA handicap is 3.5.

“Jerry is a good player, and he has a chance to come in and crack our top five,” said Bubon, who is in his second year as head coach at Point Park. “He has a great opportunity in front of him, and I am anxious to see what he can do for us during his career at Point Park.”

Some golf highlights outside of high school include taking third place at the 2009 Independent Insurance Tournament at The Lake Club. He also had a fifth-place showing at the Mahoning Valley Tournament.

Ferrell will have four years of golf eligibility although this fall will not be his first time in college. He spent a year at Youngstown State, but he did not compete for the Penguins’ golf team.

The Point Park men’s golf team is in its second year since being reinstated in the summer of 2009. The 2011 recruiting class will be the third class to enter the program since then.

Ferrell is not the first Point Park golf recruit with ties to Norteast Ohio. Bubon, a Warren, Ohio, native has as his top two players currently sophomore Austin Elder (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) and freshman James Daley (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline HS).
