PITTSBURGH -- Coming off its NAIA national tournament appearance this past year and the loss of two seniors from that team, the Point Park University men's golf progam and head coach Gabe Bubon have added two junior college all-region players -- Eric Poplowski and Ben Kennedy -- both from CCAC-Allegheny.
Poplowski, from Economy, Pa., and Kennedy, from Sewickley, Pa., signed with the Pioneers earlier this year. They will be juniors at Point Park for the 2013-14 season and have two years of eligibility left.
Both Poplowski and Kennedy competed in the NJCAA Division II national tournament this past year after leading CCAC-Allegheny to a second-place finish at the NJCAA Region 20 championship. Poplowski won the Region 20 individual title as a freshman and sophomore, and Kennedy placed sixth at the 2013 Region 20 tournament.
"With the addition of Eric and Ben," said Point Park head coach Gabe Bubon, "The sky is the limit for the next two years. We feel that we are not rebuilding, but reloading.
"Eric Poplowski has the chance to come here and be one of the best golfers we've ever had. Ben Kennedy has had a solid career at CCAC-Allegheny, and I see him right in the mix for our top 5."
In addition to his two Region 20 individual titles and two individual appearances in the NJCAA national tournament, Poplowski's two-year college career also includes taking medalist at the PCAA State Championship in October 2012 and the Western Pennsylvania Conference Championship in September 2012.
Poplowski was rated by Golfstat as the No. 78 overall player in all of junior college men's golf (Division I, II, III) in the Golfstat Top 100 NJCAA Watch List for 2013. He earned that ranking with a 75.51 scoring average for the 2012-13 year.
Kennedy placed sixth at the Region 20 tournament in 2013 to earn his first trip to the NJCAA national championship. Earlier in the year, he placed second to teammate Poplowski at the Western PA College Conference tournament to earn all-conference honors. Kennedy also placed in the top five at the PCAA State Championship to make the all-state team.
Point Park men's golf was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2009 after a 37-year hiatus. The Pioneers' finished 22nd at the NAIA national tournament in 2012-13, just their fourth year back in competition. Point Park won the KIAC Tournament this past year, and won the AMC Tournament the year before.
Before this past year, the only other NAIA national tournament appearance for the Pioneers came in 1969 when the team finished third in the nation. The Pioneers were led that year by Pioneer Athletic Hall of Famers Jim Masserio, a future PGA Tour player who placed fourth in the country, and Sam Depe III, the current owner of Hickory Heights Golf Club. But the Point Park men's golf team was discontinued in 1972.
